Decorating on a Budget
There are many popular decorating shows on television showing you how to decorate your homes. The decorator’s often have to decorate a room within a certain budget which can be hard, even for, trained decorators. Even though you don’t have the same decorating experience and skills and your money is limited- you can still create a warm and inviting home on a budget. Here are a few decorating tips for creating an inviting home on a budget.
Decorate on a budget – Research.
Watch television shows, read books, and look through magazines to gather inspiration for creating a stylish home. Although many of the decorating ideas maybe out of your budget, you can recreate the look with lower cost materials and lots of creativity. Some great looks can be found on the internet, home exhibitions shows and your local DIY or furniture stores. Learn a craft (like decorating, sewing etc.) that will help you in decorating your home. Community centres and colleges offer short courses for learning crafts such as sewing and flower arranging at a very low cost. By learning crafts you can make things yourself at a lower cost or you may be able to make money off of this (by selling to others) to afford luxuries in your home and you have a great new hobby.
Decorate on a budget – Using paint.
Paint is often the cheapest way to really decorate a room. Be creative, when decorating and don’t be afraid of using bold colours, bright colours can liven up a room. Bright colours in a (re-decorated) small room can make the room look smaller and closed off. In smaller rooms use softer and lighter colours- yellows, lavenders, and whites/off-whites.
Decorate on a budget – Organise your rooms.
Another great way to redecorate is by getting your rooms organised. This will make your home look well-kept and clutter free. Another chance to be creative, experiment with different looks using baskets, shelves etc. Ikea has some great ways to get your home and yourself organised. Use the internet to learn how and what you need to do to clear out the rubbish in your home. With different styles of storage you can organise all your everyday items and make the room look cleaner and redecorated, as well as enhancing the décor.
Decorate on a budget – Shop smart.
Stores like Ikea, Tesco, Asda, Homebase and B&Q all offer great decorating and home items at a much lower cost. Your local market can also be a great source of curtains, tableware, towels, pillows, and decorating items for your home. Hobbycraft is also great for materials, linens, and fabrics for those do-it-yourself projects, making floor cushions, curtains etc. Car boot sales and charity shops like Oxfam are a great place to find some interesting and beautiful things to decorate your home. Buy slipcovers or throws for your sofas. This is a lot cheaper than buying a new sofa and you can change the look of your whole room buy changing the throws. These are great if you have children, as they can protect your furniture and are easy to clean. Replace old plastic curtain rods with sterling silver or gold rods. B&Q and Dunhelm Mill have a beautiful choice with different styles of ends (leaves, fruit, glass) that really add that special touch at an affordable price. Buy cheap do-it-yourself furniture and then enhance, by replacing the knobs and handles on the cabinets and drawers. A beautiful brushed silver knob or ornate gold knob can make the item look expensive.
Decorate on a budget – Pictures.
Decorating a room with pictures always brighten a room and provides a focal point. Add pictures to your walls without spending a fortune. Look through old art books and magazines for great looking pictures. Buy a cheap frame and you will have beautiful artwork at a fraction of the cost.
Decorate on a budget – Change the look of a room.
Rearrange the furniture you already have in your home. Try different looks and find ways to break up a room and make the room more open and inviting. Buy large floor cushions or make your own to use as extra seating. These are great for when you have extra family or guests and not enough seating. Don’t spend money on more furniture; buy big floor cushions for your guests to sit on. Place a book or two or a couple of magazines on your coffee table that can be a conversation piece. Don’t get carried away with this as you lose the beauty of the furniture underneath. Go for the simple uncluttered look. Hope these decorating tips will encourage you to decorate your own home. Decorate one room at a time, keeping the décor simple.
