How to, decorate your home, using Neutral Colours.

When it comes to decorating many people are overwhelmed with the choice of colours available. Your home may have beautiful white walls, and your wardrobe consists of neutral colours. This may be some people’s idea of 'dull and uninteresting'. However a neutral colour palette, can be very comforting, uncomplicated, sophisticated, polished, and much more. Decorating with neutral colours can take a variety of directions and the result can be anything but boring after re-decorating.

If you want a neutral colour scheme for your decorating project, which is ideal if you are planning to sell your home. Your colour selections will be primarily composed of white, off-white, beige, tan, khaki, grey, black and other similar colours.
You should first determine the two or three main colours for your decorating project, and then select another colour as an accent. This is where your creativity and flair for decorating becomes interesting. For example, you may decide that your main three colours for decorating will include off-white, tan and black. The accent colour could be a deeper shade of the tan that you selected (or several shades of tan) and use it on accent cushions, on a patterned rug, artwork, curtains etc. By using lighter and darker shades of tan, you keep the decor interesting but still quite neutral. Black can be quite striking and not overwhelming if used in small quantities when decorating.

You could decide to go down a different decorating tact and introduce a burst of cherry red (for example) in small and select amounts as your accent colour with the palette as described above.
Imagine this home office decor: light wood floors with a rug that has an overall black and off-white pattern. There is a small sofa upholstered in tan with black piping. The windows are dressed with off-white curtains and the wall colour is medium tan. The office furniture has a light wood finish. To finish off your decoration there is a very simple silk floral arrangement on the table with bright red flowers in it. On the wall is a contemporary picture framed in black that is neutral overall. The overall effect of this decoration is neutral, but striking and memorable.

Texture is another aspect of neutral decor - the floor, walls, upholstery and window treatments, etc. By using a variety of textures in the room you are going to decorate, you will keep things interesting with something other than the neutral colours used for the decoration. If you have a neutral carpet, think of using a rug as a focal point. Try a textured paint product for the walls; and select curtains that accent the room’s neutral décor. Using an interesting textured lamp shade also enhances the neutral décor. Remember that your goal is to maintain a balance of colour and texture in the room, so don't get too carried away with the 'texture' idea. You don't want your decoration to look thrown together and uncoordinated. If you think that adding another texture to the room might be too much, it probably is.

Plan your neutral décor using fabric swatches and paint samples. There are many ways to create a neutral colour environment that run the spectrum from soothing and quiet to surprising and bold, so your room will be anything but dull and boring after your have re-decorated!
